Losses in Our Community
February 10, 2009
By Susan Freis Falknor & Karen Myers
In the last few weeks we have suffered some losses of friends and neighbors. We wanted to mention three of them here.
Father Michael Kelly
A familiar figure to many chuchgoers in the area, Father Michael Kelly, pastor of St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church in Purcellville, died on Dec. 31, struck by a tree while trying to clear Harmony Church Road in Hamilton for other drivers.

Many of those in the equestrian world remember Tippy Payne. On Dec. 6, Tippy (Barbara H.) Payne flew home to heavenly pastures. She fought well to come back from a fall on Oct. 31 that left her without feeling in her extremities, after her pony spooked and stumbled just as they began trotting in the back field.

Many will remember Dr. Geraldine Kiefer, professor of Art and Art History at Shenandoah University, who gave a fascinating talk at the 2007 Friends of Bluemont annual meeting about the Bluemont area photographed by Frances B Johnson a century ago. We regret to report that she has lost her husband, Bruce William Kiefer, who died Saturday, Dec. 13, 2008 at his home of metastatic liver cancer. He was 70.
